Is the StartKonto free?

The Commerzbank StartKonto does not include any account fees¹. You don’t have to have a minimum monthly deposit to get the Commerzbank Girocard. You also have access to online banking and the banking app & you can apply for the Young Visa credit card². To apply for this account you must meet the following requirements:

  • ¹Free for pupils, trainees, students, interns, volunteers, military and federal volunteers under 28 years of age. (otherwise 9,90€/ month )
  • Minors require the consent of their legal representatives when opening an account. The minor must be at least 7 years old.
  • Proof of education (e.g. school or student ID) must be presented to us.
  • ²In order to apply for the Young Visa credit card free of charge, the account holder must be of legal age and provide proof of a minimum monthly deposit of 300.00 EUR.

What cards are included in the start account?

  • The account holder receives a Girocard (debit card).
  • The cardholder of a Girocard must be at least seven years old.
  • Persons of full age can also apply for a free Young Visa credit card if their StartKonto receives 300 euros per month (subject to creditworthiness).
  • Authorized representatives can also obtain a Girocard (for a fee) upon application.

What documents are required for the opening?

  • Valid identification (ID card, passport or child ID card) of the future account holder and, in the case of young people under 18, of all legal representatives must be presented.
  • As proof of legal representation, we also require an appropriate document (birth certificate, family register, etc.).
  • If a minor does not yet have an identity card, please bring the birth certificate.
  • If a legal representative has sole custody of a minor, please bring the corresponding proof.
  • We also require proof of education from the account holder, such as a school or student ID.

Conditions to open a Commerzbank account in Germany

The primary condition to open a German bank account is that you must be registered in Germany. [register now] The reason: You must provide your German home address. How do I open a Commerzbank account online?

You can open your bank account at Commerzbank easily and quickly in 6 steps:

  1. The first step is to fill out the German online application form and set your Commerzbank login data for your checking account. You will then receive your new IBAN and a confirmation of your order. Here you will find our guide for this application form.
  2. After you have saved your application, you will receive all important documents by email.
  3. In the third step, you must confirm your identity. This can be done either via video chat, PostIdent procedure or in a Commerzbank branch. You will receive more information by email.
  4. After the verification follows the activation of the photoTAN, which will be sent to your online banking within 1 -2 business days.
  5. For security reasons, the PIN of your new card will be sent to you first and independently of your Girocard.
  6. About four working days later, your new Girocard will arrive in a separate letter.

Guide to opening an account with Commerzbank

You can usually use online banking 1-2 business days after you have legitimized yourself, as soon as you have activated the photoTAN procedure.

You can usually withdraw cash and pay in stores with your new Girocard after one week.

How long does it take to open a bank account in Commerzbank?

Once you have verified yourself and activated the photoTAN procedure, it usually takes only 1 – 2 working days until your online banking is completely ready for use.

Visit the self-service area in your branch. The machines are available for cash deposits and withdrawals. All you need is your Girocard. Insert your card, enter your PIN and choose your language.  Select the “Deposit money” or “Withdraw money” option in the menu and follow the instructions.

In case you lose your card, it is important to have it blocked as soon as possible. If you are a customer at Commerzbank, you can contact customer service.  The service hotline is available 24 hours a day. Alternatively, you can also have your cards blocked in your online banking account, after logging in – with a TAN.
